Shake, Señora: Harlem Shake Hospitality Hits

You may have noticed a trend of videos sweeping across youtube. Each video is about 30 seconds long, starts out a little awkward, and by the end, you’re laughing harder than you expected. No, we don’t mean the video of Taylor Swift featuring a Screaming Goat; we’re talking about the Harlem Shake. No one’s sure why these videos got so popular, but the craze started with one guy and some friends in a dorm room and has since blown up to include massive businesses like Google and Facebook.

Personally, we’re way more fond of the hospitality scene getting involved in these, especially with a new burger-and-shake joint currently slated to open in Harlem by the same name. The restaurant managers who’ve allowed their staff to stand on things, wear weird costumes, and just generally rock out have earned our highest respect. Thus, without any further ado, we present the Harlem Shake: International Hospitality Edition

  1. Sharehouse Coffee – Richland, WA

It starts with a squirrel. We won’t spoil the rest for you, but suffice it to say, if you’ve ever wanted to see a group of baristas cutting loose, this video does not disappoint. Things to look for: the rat costume and “slippery when wet” signs.

  2. Houston Avenue Bar & Grill – Laval, Quebec

This Quebec restaurant must’ve had a great time filming their video. We were most entertained by the deadmau5 head that kicks off this whole ordeal, along with the fact that not only the servers but also the patrons are involved with this massive dance party.

  3. Tartinery – Nolita, NYC

There are no words to truly describe this take on the Shake. Really. If you can look away from Buddha-in-a-tutu (oh, just you wait), be sure to keep an eye out for the bubbles, the unicorn horse mask, and a rogue stormtrooper.

  4. BC Restaurant – Syracuse, NY

If you’ve ever worked in food service, you already know the kitchen is where the shenanigans happen, but this video just serves to prove that point to the rest of the world. We’re most impressed by the woman in heels rocking out while standing on the metal sink. Keep an eye out for male cupid and the chicken suit.

  5. Las Casuelas – Turlock, California
This California restaurant takes on the Harlem Shake from a unique angle, with bartenders crouching to be captured as they groove across the top of the bar. We’re impressed by the tenacity of the crouching dancers but the winner of this video is clearly the teddy bear shaking its moneymaker in the bottom right corner.

  6. TRU Restaurant – Chicago, IL

We first want to acknowledge that this restaurant is Michelin Starred, indicating their reputation for taking food to the next level—and they do the same when it comes to viral videos. Tru has set that bar to almost unreachable heights with this one. And, apparently, set it on fire.

  7. Jamie Oliver – Yes, that Jamie Oliver

And now, our celebrity guest star! Jamie Oliver gets in on the Harlem Shake’s viral madness—and brings his whole team in on it too. In Jamie Oliver masks. No, seriously. However, we’re pretty sure the real star of this video is Mr. Potato-Head

  8. Nu Crepes – Chicago, IL

This video certainly leaves an impression! The staff of Nu Crepes in Chicago get down on tables, countertops, and keep an eye out for the daring dancers hanging from the balcony. Also worth noting is the prevalence of animal costumes—a frequent occurrence in these videos, and one which continually makes us ask ourselves, “Do other people just have animal costumes hanging in their closets?” Regardless, we’re pretty big fans.

  9. Cook + Solo Restaurants – Philadelphia, PA

On Monday this group of restaurants marked the official end of the Harlem Shake at their Industry Night, by giving out free food to all industry people who showed up in costume for their Harlem Shake Dance Party. Most notable in this video is the entrance of the dancer at 0:25, who is later chided for “ruining” the Harlem Shake. It’s okay, guy, you’re still our favorite!
